Short history of the breed.The American Water Spaniel descends from different watch and waterspaniel breeds who came with immigrants to the United States. Originally the breed was called Brown (Water) Spaniel. The breed was especially developed to be used particularly for the hunt on water game as hunting and retrieving birddog. At this hunt the dog can, because of his size, easily be taken in a boat or a lodge. At the beginning of the twentieth century people in the United States became more interested in the English retrievers and the number of Amercian Water Spaniels decreased drasticly. Nowadays there are only a few American Water Spaniels, but they are highly appreciated by hunters. Outside Norther America we hardly see these dogs. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1940.
Description of the breed.The American Water Spaniel is a middlesized, typical spaniel with curly coat. He is easy to train, has good endurance and is strong.
Head: in relation to the body middlesized, with a rathe broad skull and slightly pronounced stop. Powerful snouot, the rhinarium matching with the colour of the coat.
Eyes: haselnut colour or darker, in harmony with the colour of the coat. Lively and wachtful expression.
Ears: long and broad, set on low, but somewhat above the corner of the eyes. The earflaps should reach till the point of the nose en be covered with curly hair.
Teeth: carnassial
Neck: moderate length, powerful and dry.
Body: powerful, with wel angulated shoulder and upper arm, deep chest with well curved ribs. Strong back with wide an well muscled lumbars.
Limbs: strong forelegs with good bone. Good angulation of forequarters and backquarters. Low hocks. The frontlegs as well as the hindlegs should be parallel.
Feet: well closed, with strong soles.
Tail: moderate length, carried right under of in the extension of the back. Lively tailmovements. Well haired with curly coat.
Colour: liver of dark chocolate. Little white marks on toes and chest are allowed.
Size: 38-46 cm.
