Short history of the breedThe American Foxhound is a breed dat descends from different European foxhounds and especially from the English. When European immigrants settled in Northern America, they often had hunting dogs and after a while they developed different breeds. The American Foxhound seems a lot like the English, but is as heavy and often a little higher on the legs. The amount of registrations at the American Kennel Club is very low, but the dog is a very popular amongst the active hunters. The dog hunts nowadays alone. Outside the United States the breed hardly appears.
Breed descriptionHead: rather long, slightly curved skull, rather broad. Powerful snout with lightly pronounced stop, flat nose ridge, black rhinarium.
Eyes: bit, well set apart, brown or hazelnut. Friendly expression.
Ears: set on rather low, nearly reachting the rhinarium. They are thin, rather broad and hang toward the cheeks, the lower part at the front is slightly fowlded inside.
Teeth: is not described in the breed description, but carnassial teeth are rather common.
Neck: of moderate length, dry and strong.
Body: well angulated schoulder en upper arm, muscled and strong. Deep and long chest with lots of space. Well curved ribs, slightly risen stomachline. Strong back, broad and slightly curved lumbars.
Limbs: straight forelgs with very good bone, short and straight forefeet. Moderate angulated quartherhind with low hocks. Well muscled thighs. Parallel legs.
Feet: like a fox, with well curved and closed toes. Thick and strong soles.
Tail: set on high, carried high, but not above the back
Coat: close, hard and rather short
Colour: all colours are permitted
Size: male 55-63 cm, female 53-60 cm.
