Short history of the breed.The breed originated from the French provence Ariege that adjoins the Spanish border.
The breed was recognized in 1912 and is a combination of the Bleu de Gascogne, Gascon Saintongeois and Chien Saintongeois and Chien d´Artois. The breed hunts in socalled packs, that is different dogs together, and is specialized in rabbits, especially in mountainious and heavy territory, like the territory of origin. Het breed is nearly unknown outside this own region.
Description of the breed.The Ariegeois is a middlesized, pliable and elegant hunting dog.
Head: long, dry and rather small, with a flat or slightly convex ridge of the nose, dry lips, black rhinarium
Eyes: dark, with dry eyelids, friendly and loyal expression.
Ears: set on low, fairly long, fine and soft.
Teeth: is not mentioned in the breed description.
Neck: rather long, elegant and slightly curved.
Body: deep chest, long normally curved ribs, straight and strong backline, rather flat croupe, slightly risen stomachline.
Limbs: shoulders set behind, good angulation of the fore and hindquarters, well muscled and somewhat flat lumbars, good bone, straight and parallel legs, low hocks.
Feet: long, strong socalled rabbitfeet
Tailt: set on in the extension of the backline, carried sable and merry.
Coat: fine and close
Gait: light and pliable.
Colour: treecoloured with on the head mainly black and tan.
Size: male 55-60 cm, female 53-58 cm.
