BASSET ARTÉSIEN NORMAND

  Short history of the breed:

The Basset Artesien Normand is a shortlegged breed from France and is still used for hunting hares and rabbits. He comes from the Saint Hubertusdog and the Bretagne dog and some other french huntingdogs that were already used in the 16th century. In the 19th century was started with the pure breeding of the dog. This dog is very popular in many countries.


  Breed description:

The Basset Artesien Normand is a short-legged, noble and comparatively long dog.

Head: domed, of medium width, looks dry, the stop is marked but not exaggerated., the muzzle is slightly convex before the nose.

Eyes: big and dark, with quit expression

Ears: thin, supple, set low, always below the line of the eyes. narrow, corkscrew-shaped, the should reach at least as far as the muzzle.

Teeth: scissors bite

Body: a fairly long neck, a broad, powerful back, the croup slopes a little and the loins are slightly tucked up, thighs are full and muscular, rounded chest, wide and moderately deep with a prominent breastbone, ribs are rounded

Legs: forelegs are short, thick and crooked of half-crooked

Feeth: placed vertically, toes are turned out slightly.

Tail: fairly long, thick at the root and tapers to the tip, it should not be carried over the back or gaily.

Coat: short and very dense

Colour: two colours are allowed: tricolour (red and white with a black hare or badger-coloured mantle or black) and bicolour. The bicolour specimens are white with orange.

Shoulder height: 26-36 cm.


  Character:

This breed is known for its aimable, friendly and gentle temperament, they are affectionate and loyal, but can be headstrong and independent. They have an excellent sense of smell. The tend to live in packs and get on fine with other dogs. Visitors can expect a warm and high-spirited welcome. They are intelligent but not very eager to learn. The owner will need plenty of patience and understanding.


  Grooming:

They need relatively little grooming. Brushing once a week is sufficient.
