Short history of the breed:The Beagle is a very old breed. The dog is used as pack hound for tracking and scenting came. The task of the dog was to catch the bunny and bite it to death. The people did not use any weapons during this hunt. After the First World War they needed a dogbreed which hunted slowly. Dogs with short legs became more and more interesting and amongst them the Beagle. These dogs were formed to pack hounds en change that was not without problems. The Beagles is seen in many parts of the world.
Breed description:The Beagles is a compact, powerful, lively dog.
Head: fairly long and powerful, free from wrinkels and with a pronounced stop. The slightly domed skull is moderately broad. The forenose is broad with wide nostrils.
Eyes: rather large, but not bulging or deep set and set well apart.
Ears: set low, hang gracefully alongside the cheeks, rounded, reach nearly to the forenose
Teeth: scissors teeth
Body: strong back, rather short, deep brest, straight horizontal topline, loins are strong and short, elbows are solid and not turned in or out, forelegs are straight and round of bone, close and strong feet, well-arched toes. Neck is slightly curved.
Tail: set on high and carried gaily with a slight curve
Movement: free
Coat: short and dense
Colours: any hound colour, except liver is allowed, the tip of the stern must be white and also the tip of the tail.
Shoulder height: max. 41 cm, min. 33 cm.
Character:These dogs are lively, active, very aimable and cheerful. They are intelligent but also stubborn. They have an excellent scenting nose.
Grooming:They require relatively little grooming.
