Short history of the breed:The province Gascogne lies on the southwest coast of France, near the spanish border. The dogs from this area are from a classical french type and from these the most modern french huntingdogs origin from. The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is the lowlegged version of the Grand Bleu de Gascogne and is very appreciated by hunters. He hunts mainly small animals.
Breed description:The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is a lowlegged, long and shorthaired dog
Head: long and wedge-shaped, dry, the long muzzle is slightly convex, the skull is domed with a moderatly pronounced occipital protuberance.
Eyes: darkbrown, friendly and somewhat sad expression
Ears: thin and curling, set below the eyeline and should reach to the tip of the nose
Teeth: not mentioned in the breeddescription
Body: long and solid back, short loins somewhat curved, deep flanks and muscular thighs. The shoulders are muscular, forelegs should be strong and straight, strong feet, long neck slightly arched
Tail: rather long, slightly arched
Coat: short and not to fine, desely planted
Colour: blue speckled with black, with or without a mantle. Tan markings are found above the eyes, cheeks, lips, on the legs and the inside of the ears.
Shoulder height: 34-42 cm.
Character:These dogs are gentle, friendly and social, fairly independent. Their sense of smell is outstanding
