Short history of the breed:The Bearded Collie is used as a sheep dog in the Scottish Highlands. The story tells that a ship from Poland took sheepdogs with him and trated them against Scottish sheep. These sheepdogs were from the old breed Owczarek Nizinny. They think that these dogs are the anscestors of the Bearded Collie.
Breed description:The Bearded Collie is slightly longer than tall (5:4), slim, lively
Head: wide, smooth and square skull, which is as broad as it is long. The muzzle has the same length as the skull. The stop is moderately deep.
Eyes: big, set wide apart with a lively expression.
Ears: moderately long and carried pendulous.
Teeth: scissors teeth
Body: the back is level and the loins are strong. Deep chest, well arched ribs, straight legs with strong bone, hindquarters are muscular with low heels.
Tail: set low, should reach down to the heel, the tip is carried in an upward curve but not over the back
Coat: double, upper layer is straight, rough and hard, it should not be woolly or curly, a slight wave is acceptable. The undercoat is soft, dense and woolly.
Colour: slate, reddish brown, black, blue, sandy-coloured brown and any shade of grey with possible white markings
Shoulder height: dog 53-56 cm, bitch 51-53 cm.
Character:The Bearded Collie is a cheerful, very lively, high spirited dog, alert and full of self-confidence, they are active and always in for any kind of excercise.
Grooming:This is one of the most important aspects of keeping a Bearded Collie. It needs lots of grooming. The hair must be brushed and combed several times a week.
