Short history of the breed:The Afghan Hound is one the Eastern Hounds with a very long history. The breed comes from Afghanistan and is mainly used as a family and watchdog but also for the hunt on rabbits. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the first Afghan Hounds came to Europe and after World War I the breed was very known as showdog and as a running dog.
Breed description:
Head: the skull is long with a slight stop and a long muzzle.
Eyes: nearly triangular, placed slightly obliquely in the head
Ears: set well back a

Body: back of moderate length, which falls slightly toward the hip, hipbones are wide apart en very prominent. The loins are short and broad, the chest is deep, legs are straight and solid, elbows close to the body. The neck is long and powerful
Tail: of moderate length, set low, a ring at the end and is raised in movement
Coat: long of a silky texture that covers the entire body, except for the back and the face which have dense and short hair. The tail is lightly feathered.
Colour: all colours are permitted, most common is red, and black and tan
Shoulder height: dogs 68 - 74 cm, bitches: 63 - 69 cm
Character:Afghan Hounds are independent, aristocratic and proud. They are intelligent and placid indoors, but alert and active outside.
Grooming:This is an important part of keeping an Afghan Hound. The long coat is very soft and silky. To groom an Afghan Hound you should allow one hour or longer twice a week.
