General:

BASENJI

Country of origin: England (Africa)

  Short history of the breed:

At the origin of this breed stands a Schensidog from the Kwango district of Congo. These dogs were quards and cleaners but were also used for the hunt. They were used for the hunt of swamprats, these are rats of about 8 to 10 kilos. Their bite was very dangerous for humans. In 1895 two Basenjis werde brought to Engeland but became very ill and died. It wasn't till 1937 that the breed was rediscovered and known in England. A little bit later the breed was imported in the United States from England as well as Africa. The adaption to the northern climate was difficult because of their sensitivity for illnes and their coat. Now these problems are solved and the breed can be found in many countries. Basenjis do not bark but produce a kind of yodeling sound.

  Character:

The Basenji is independent and self-willed, but very devoted to the family. Intelligent, clever and inquisitive, they are alert to what goes on. They get well on with children, provided they do not pester animals. They can never be considered real playmates, this breed is reserved towards strangers, contact with other dogs is generally no problem. They have a fairly strong hunting instinct.

  Grooming:

Basenjis are very clean animals, they shed little and do not need much grooming. Most Basenjis cope well with the heat, but detest rain and cannot stand cold or drafts an are therefor unsuitable for kennel life.
