General: AUSTRALIAN STOCK HORSE
Country of origin: Australia
Short history of the breed:In 1788 the first horses came to Australia by Governor Arthur Phillip. They were imported from the South African Cape. From that time on an increasing number of horses were imported mainly Thoroughbreds and Arabians and these were selectively bred in the New South Wales area for ranch work. The tough and enduring horse that evolved was called Waler. The early Walers were highly regarded, during the First World War, they were used by the allied forces. The
Australian Stock Horse developed from the Waler and was based on a largely Anglo-Arab type. In 1954 there were large influences from the American Quarter Horse and there is probably Percheron blood in the breed. In 1971 the Australian Stock Horse Association was formed.
